Flixotide

Flixotide puffers contain a medicine called ‘Fluticasone propionate’. This medicine belongs to a group of medicines known as Corticosteroids, commonly known as steroids for treatment of Asthma and COPD. It does not give immediate relief from an asthma attack and may take up to a week to start to work. Nonetheless using your Flixotide puffer regularly every day, helps reduce the swelling and irritation in the walls of the small air passages in your lungs.

Flixotide is available as two types of inhaler devices namely Accuhaler which is a form of a Diskus inhaler and Evohaler which is a form of a Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI). In the USA, the medicine formulation similar to a Flixotide is available as Ventolin.

Data generated from inhaler prescriptions and retail cost of inhalers suggest that $25 billion per year are spent on inhalers. Using published data on rates of incorrect inhaler use, authors estimated that $ 10 billion per year are wasted due to poor technique.

Based on the above data it may be possible that people using a Flixotide inhaler are also facing problems of not getting correct and effective dose. One of the main reasons may be lack of proper inhaler technique education provided by the care givers or pharmacists.

Flixotide Evohaler being a MDI requires correct hand breath co-ordination to take an effective and complete dose. Getting the technique right is the key to ensure right amount of dose reaches the lungs and in a long run saves cost on prescription inhalers.

Meanwhile Flixotide is also available in a Diskus form. In contrast to an Evohaler the breathing technique for this type of inhaler requires you to breathe in Quickly and Deeply to take your medicine effectively.

Precautions

Things to keep in mind when taking this inhaler:

  • Please tell your doctor if you are taking any steroid tablets
  • If you are a HIV patient
  • If you ever stopped any other asthma medicine before

Remember that the medicine in your Flixotide inhaler is taken via inhalation only. You will find the instructions on how to use your inhaler on the leaflet in the pack. Follow the instructions carefully before taking the inhaler.

You should visit your doctor or pharmacist regularly to check that you are using your Flixotide puffer correctly. If you are not breathing the medicine in properly, the medicine may not be helping you as much as it could.

If you become wheezy or feel tightness in the chest before the next dose is due, use a ‘reliever puffer’ in the usual way. You should get relief from your ‘reliever puffer’ within a few minutes.

You must use your Flixotide puffer every day. Do not stop using it, even if you feel better, unless your doctor tells you.
